The Historic Mussoorie Library: A Timeless Landmark
The Mussoorie Library, established in 1843, is one of India's oldest. Its creation was a community effort, led by Vansittart, then in charge of Dehradun, who raised Rs 2500 from the public. This swift establishment, just 17 years after Mussoorie's beginnings, shows how keen British residents were to set up intellectual and cultural spaces, much like those back home. You'll find this historic library right in the heart of Mussoorie at Gandhi Chowk, also known as Library Chowk. It's a prominent landmark overlooking a busy intersection and quickly became a "treasure trove of knowledge" for the growing British settlement.
A Rich Collection and Victorian Charm
Housed in a charming Victorian-style building with ornate
steel columns, gabled roofs, and checkered windows, the library boasts an
impressive collection of over 15,000 books. This includes rare travelogues,
historical surveys, records, and journals. Its reading area offers a mix of old
and new books and magazines, plus over 5,000 documents on archaeology, local
history, Indian history, and literature. Today, it continues to function as a
lending library, though entry is generally restricted to members only.
Gandhi's Connection and Modern Challenges
The library holds a special place in history, having been
visited multiple times by Mahatma Gandhi, who addressed social issues like
untouchability to large crowds gathered nearby in 1929. A "Gandhi
Dwar" and statue now honor his connection to the spot.
While celebrated author Ruskin Bond considers it a favorite,
the library faces modern challenges from mass tourism and overcrowding around
Library Chowk, leading to traffic congestion and parking issues. Historically, photography
inside the library has been strictly prohibited.
The library currently operates daily: 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM in
summer and 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM in winter. It offers a reading section and a
computer center with internet facilities, though widespread Wi-Fi may not be
available. To address its challenges, there's a need for preservation and
digitization of its decaying manuscripts, expanding facilities, adding more
reading rooms, and developing a digital catalog. Proposed solutions like the
Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway aim to ease traffic and boost tourism,
potentially benefiting the library's accessibility and long-term
sustainability.
