The Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, India, was inaugurated on September 15, 2010, on the occasion of the 102nd birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. C N Annadurai, popularly known as ‘ANNA’. The library was named in his honour due to his great interest in books and libraries.

This is a prime example of a library utilizing Big Data and other contemporary technologies. This cutting-edge library, which was inaugurated in 2010, boasts a large collection of books, journals, magazines, and manuscripts. It employs an integrated library management system that encompasses automated book issue and return, user smartcards, access controls, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The library features a dedicated section for Braille, children’s books, and manuscripts. It is designed to house up to 1,250 individuals and includes a dedicated children’s area spanning 15,000 sq. ft., equipped with multimedia kits and storybooks. The library also caters to the visually impaired with a section offering talking books and Braille displays. The library staff consists of 200 members, including 96 permanent and 40 contract employees, and it houses a collection of 550,000 books.

The library sees a daily footfall of approximately 2701 visitors. The building is architecturally designed to ensure the reading area receives ample daylight. The western end is shielded by service areas to prevent solar radiation. The seven-story atrium allows for abundant natural light. In July 2010, the library building was awarded the LEED NC Gold rating from IGBC, making it the first library building in Asia to achieve this. The project has secured 43 LEED points, the highest among any government buildings in Tamil Nadu to date.

Mission and budget

 

The mission and objectives of the Anna Centenary Library are to provide a state-of-the-art facility that caters to the diverse information needs of its users, supports education and career development, and promotes an environment-friendly infrastructure.




Collection:

Collections are stored in digital form and able to access through computer.

More than 2 lakhs e-Books 20,000 e-Journals will be available.

3000 + Springer E- books are also available on its website.

1500 printed Braille books, 145 e-books and 1080 Audio Books.

Awards:

LEED NC Gold Rating: In July 2010, the library building received the LEED NC Gold rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). It holds the distinction of being the first library building in Asia to achieve this prestigious certification. The project earned 43 LEED points, the highest among any government buildings in Tamil Nadu.

Gold Certified Green Building: The library is a Gold Certified Green Building, thoughtfully developed with gardens, fountains, and trees surrounding the compound. This design fosters a connection with nature and contributes to a pleasant environment.

The Own Book Reading Section:

Periodicals Section:

The Periodicals Section at the Anna Centenary Library is situated on the first floor in the ‘A’ Wing. Newspapers, Magazines, and Journals, Multilingual Dailies, Indian and Foreign Magazines, Exclusive Women’s Section, etc. invites you to explore, learn, and stay informed through its extensive collection.

Tamil Section:

The Tamil Section at the Anna Centenary Library is a treasure trove of knowledge, celebrating the richness of Tamil culture and intellect. Ancient Tamil Literature, Computer Science, Journalism, Astrology, Psychology, Religion, Philosophy, Humanities and Sciences, Technology, History and Geography, etc. this section isn’t limited to Tamil alone—it embraces other South Indian languages and Hindi as well.

Membership Fee Details

Individual membership Fee (First Time Fee): Rs.250/- and Annual Subscription Fee: Rs.100/.

Family (Adult – 2 Persons + Children -2 Persons) Membership Fee (First Time Fee): Rs.500/- and Annual Subscription Fee: Rs.200/-.

Senior Citizen membership Fee (First Time Fee): Rs.100/- and Annual Subscription Fee: Rs.50/-.

Students’ membership Fee (First Time Fee): Rs.150/- and Annual Subscription Fee: Rs.75/-.

Auditorium:

Auditorium has an elaborate CCTV system. It can accommodate 1100 people. A projector with latest technology is available in the auditorium to screen the movie, The Auditorium stage is ideal for demanding theatrical performances.





Amphitheatre:

 The crescent shaped amphitheatre with a seating capacity of more than 800 people available. It is equipped with world-class acoustics and a state-of-the-art lighting system. The stage is a versatile option for product launches, celebrity gatherings, corporate events, and entertainment spectacles. a rehearsal room and green rooms contain complete support facilities. 



Conference hall:

The Conference Hall seamlessly blends simple elegance with modern design, creating an environment that exudes refinement. It is an ideal venue for events that demand a higher standard of sophistication. With a spacious capacity accommodating up to 151 people, the hall ensures comfort during conferences, seminars, presentations, and business meetings.
