Bedok Public Library, Singapore
Bedok
Public Library, situated in Singapore. It was inaugurated on 28 September 1985
by Prof. S Jayakumar, who was serving as the Minister for Law & Foreign
Affairs and Second Minister for Law at that time. This library was the sixth
branch established by the National Library Board (NLB).
Initially,
it was referred to as Bedok Community Library and retained this name until
2008. After providing services to the community for 32 years at its initial
location, the library was temporarily shut down on 20 August 2017.
Subsequently, it moved to a new integrated complex, Heartbeat@Bedok. The
library reopened at its new location on 28 October 2017, with the inauguration
ceremony presided over by Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, the then Minister for
Communications and Information. Currently, the library is part of an integrated
complex that also includes a community club and a polyclinic. The library is
designed to be senior-friendly and displays a soothing, nature-inspired environment.
Services:
Literature and Media: The library is home to an extensive collection of about 200,000 books, more than 300 magazines, and 13,000 audio-visual titles.
Comfortable Reading Areas:
It offers various reading spaces and multimedia stations, with a seating capacity for 435 people.
Round-the-Clock Services: Services like bookdrop and reservation lockers are available 24 hours a day.
Online
Resources: Users
have complimentary access to NLB e-Resources which include e-Databases, eBooks,
and e-Magazines. They can also manage their loans and reservations, and use
other account services.
Malay Library Services: This is a unique feature of the library, offering the largest collection of Malay print and non-print materials among NLB libraries

The library is equipped with features like large print books and electronic magnifiers for enlarging texts, and keyboards with large alphabets for the elderly.
Age-Specific Spaces:
The
library has dedicated spaces for different age groups, including a study area
for teenagers, a Story Circle for children, and an early literacy section for

The
library hosts a one-stop service, Discover Health@BECL, which educates visitors
about various health and fitness topics through exhibitions.

Additionally the library also celebrates special cultural occasions. For instance, during the Chinese New Year, the library hosts storytelling sessions about Chinese New Year legends and organizes Mandarin orange painting activities. These events aim to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the holiday’s cultural significance, instilling a sense of cultural pride in the visitors.

Membership process:
To
become a member of the Bedok Public Library, which is part of the National
Library Board (NLB) network in Singapore, you would need to follow the general
membership process of the NLB. Here are the steps:
Eligibility: Membership is open to all
residents of Singapore. This includes Singaporeans, Permanent Residents, and
foreigners residing in Singapore.
Registration: You can register for
membership online through the NLB’s official website or at any NLB library
using the self-service kiosks.
Documents
Required:
For Singaporeans and Permanent Residents, a valid pink or blue National
Registration Identity Card (NRIC) is required. Foreigners need to provide a
valid Employment Pass, Dependent Pass, or Student Pass.
Membership
Fee: For
Singaporeans and Permanent Residents, basic membership is free. Foreigners are
required to pay an annual fee.
Borrowing
Privileges:
Once the membership is activated, you can start borrowing items from any NLB
library, including Bedok Public Library. The number of items you can borrow at
